AT&T?s free Wi-Fi offer for iPhone is very short-lived

ATT'S FREE WI-FI OFFER FOR IPHONE IS VERY SHORT-LIVED

Posted by David on May 5th, 2008 at 05:22pm

In a strange move ATT has disabled recently launched free Wi-Fi for the iPhone. Now it is not only unavailable in public places but also in Starbucks and Barnes and Noble stores.

Instead of seeing specially designed webpage, users were greeted by enter username/password screen for ATT wireless account.

ATT did not comment on neither free Wi-Fi or on recent Wi-Fi disappearance.

It is speculated that the free Wi-Fi was shut down because laptop users could easily trick the system into thinking that they are using iPhones.

The free Wi-Fi for iPhone users was shut off due to the fact it was easily cheated," said a user identified as CommanderData on MacRumors. "Anyone can set their user-agent string to Safari and connect to the Wi-Fi if they know a valid iPhone telephone number. This means you could connect with your laptop if you used your buddy's number for free!"

Free Wi-Fi from AT&T

FREE WI-FI FROM ATT

Posted by David on May 1st, 2008 at 12:50pm

It appears that ATT is offering free Wi-Fi usage for iPhone users at 71,000 ATT hotspots, Barnes and Noble, and Starbucks stores. Instead of the usual login screen, users will be greeted by new screen prompting them to enter their phone number. Once the phone number is entered, one will be able to enjoy free Wi-Fi.

However the service is not yet available everywhere, but it should be soon.
