iPhone Firmware v. 1.1.4 Now Available

Today, Apple has released a new update to the iPhone firmware. This puts the firmware at version 1.1.4
firmware
There is still no word as to what updates have been made to the firmware, but early reports state that a few minor bugs have been fixed, including the SMS order bug.
Apple has been slated to release the new SDK for the iPhone in February, and many people think that this new firmware update gives the iPhone the code it needs to run third party applications.

We will announce new information as it becomes available, but as a note, reports are coming in that the ZiPhone jailbreak is still fully functional, although the developers recommend not updating to 1.1.4 until it has been fully tested.

Can Apple sell 10 Million iPhones this year?

Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi published a transcript from Apple investor meeting, about the unlocked iPhones and how to deal with this issue.

It seems that Apple is faced with 2 issues: falling demand for the iPhone and loss from unlocked iPhone sales.

Toni Sacconaghi said that iPhone will make 6% of Apples revenues in 2008, and as much as 25% by 2012.

He also reports that December sales were over 180,000 units per week, which would accumulate to 10 million at the end of the year. However European sales of the phone weren’t as promising. He is projecting 1.45 million units sold by March, 6.9 million for the September 2008 fiscal year and 7.9 million for calendar 2008.

f.jpg

However he is still optimistic that Apple might yet just do it with the introduction of the 3G model.

He notes that, if Apple sold 10 million iPhones this year but 30% were unlocked. The company would be losing out on $1.1 billion-$1.3 billion of revenue.

1.1.4 rumor is a lie

Recently we reported to you about possible 1.1.4 iPhone firmware update. Unfortunately it is a lie. The person behind this has simply admitted that he lied.

He said that Tiny-Code was never related to Apple in any way, and they could not have known such information. He also was amazed of how much unrest his joke has caused.

Remember, that anything categorized as a rumor, should stay as such, and most importantly not to be believed until Apple releases some sort of statement. We all know that it is pretty secretive company and nothing just leaks out for no reason.

SDK for iPhone might be late

There is less than 1 week remaining until Apple's release day for SDK. However, according to one source, it might be delayed.

Firstly there are no comments from Apple. Secondly, there are no events related to SDK launch. And it is unlikely that Apple will release it without some sort of big presentation. However we shouldn’t panic since there are still several days for Apple to surprise us.

Stay with us next week (and every other week) as we bring you latest news on iPhone happenings.

Vote on Oscars ads and trailers with your iPhone

If you weren’t living under a rock in some deep cave then you know that Oscar nominations are happening this Sunday, February 24.

For this occasion MIMIEO who previously did Superbowl poling, has launched an Oscar poling website for iPhone.

You will be able to vote on Oscar nominated film trailers and on commercials broadcasted during the live show.

mimeo.jpg

Following each movie clip, you will be asked whether you thought the trailer was entertaining and the ad made you more or less likely to see the film. Same will be done with commercials and whether the opinion of the product has increased or not after seeing the ad. Polling responses will then be used to create real-time movie rankings on the VoteOscarsAds website.

Polling data is then collected from mobile devices and the web simultaneously. It offers insight into measurement of both the entertainment and marketing value of ads.

Make Your iPhone a Touchpad!

Not everyone would think of it, but you may have. Ever wanted to use your iPhone as a mobile touchpad for your PC? Imagine using the iPhone to control the mouse cursor for your PC, while it sits across the room, while you're presenting something to your boss via a projection. Yeah, that's handy.

Directly from the Developer's website: Touchpad enables you to use your iPhone (or iPod Touch) as a wireless touchpad. You can control the mouse on your PC using just your iPhone. You can move the mouse around, click, double-click, and even drag (double click but keep it pressed and then move around). Vertical scrolling is even possible, by click-and-dragging on the right edge of the iPhone screen.

touchpad_big.jpg

Below are installation instructions, and a video of Touchpad in use.

To get using this app, you should follow these instructions, also from the developer's website.

1. You need a jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch with Installer.app on it.
2. Start Installer.app, and go to Sources. Click "Edit", and then Add this repository: http://cnp.qlnk.net/
3. After the refresh, install Touchpad from the Utilities category.
4. Install VNC on the machine you want to control. I recommend TightVNC for Windows and Linux. Mac users should follow these detailed instructions.

And there you go, now, assuming you followed the instructions properly, you can control your PC or Mac with your iPhone! Genius!

Apple?s Advanced Multitouch Gesturing Control Panel in Mac OS X Mock-up.

Although it is still far away from Nokia's touchless screen patent of which we already had a pleasure to write in one of our articles, Apple's Advanced Multitouch Gesturing Control Panel is still a step forward. MacRumours.com is showing a Mock-up of patent created by Wayne Westerman of Fingerwoks - company bought by Apple in 2006. The mock-up reveals the possibilities of setting up standard trackpad, basic multitouch, and advanced multitouch controls. While the basic multitouch controls are already known to Apple's consumers, advanced multitouch controls are still to be introduced in new products.

By using four finger swipes up/down/left/right the user can control Expose and Dashboard.

012018-gesture2_4001.png

Using a Thumb or Forefinger one can control all operations on file.

012018-gesture3_400.png

Editing operations such as Copy, Cut, Paste, Undo, Select All, Tab, and Cancel can be performed using a Thumb and two fingers.

012019-gesture4_400.png

The Advanced Multitouch Gesturing Control Panel is also claimed to distinguish different finger combinations (eg. adjacent and non-adjacent finger presses). Also the fourth finger creates its separate pattern and can be used for controlling functions like adjusting volume or putting the computer to sleep.

Apple is said to expand its basic multitouch solutions to the rest of their notebook product line. However nothing has been officially stated on the eventual implementation of the advanced multitouch controls.

iPhones popularity harms potential Apple profits

The Erica Sadun?s findme application helps to find your iPhone.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog gives an interesting solution to a stolen or lost iPhone problem.

Thanks to Twitter and findme your iPhone will be calling home regularly in case of a theft or loss to help you locate it. findme returns the nearest to your iPhone tower's location ID, latitude and langitude on Google maps. Moreover, findme developed by Erica together with Twitter developer Britt Selvitelle keeps the reports secure without clogging your message box with too many messages.

First one needs to open a Twitter account using a separate unique for the iPhone email address. Tick off Protect my settings in the Settings panel and click on save.
twitterprotect.jpg
Now only the chosen ones will be able to see the Twitter updates on the iPhone account.

To make the iPhone tweet the findme program has to be installed. To contact Twitt the iPhone will need Curl, which is part of the BSD distribution. Now one has to create a tweet shell script by copying the following text and pasting it into the binaries folder.

#! /bin/sh
curl --basic --user username:password
--data status="`/var/root/bin/findme`"
http://twitter.com/statuses/update.xml#! /bin/sh

It is important to use the right path to findme and substitute the username and password. Then to make the file executable:

chmod 755 tweet

Now it is time to create a launch daemon by copying com.apple.daily.plist. from System/Library/LaunchDaemons to com.sadun.tweet.plist. That still has to be edited. First one has to updated the label to com.sadun.tweet.plist. It is advisable to delete the two lines relating to "nice" then. The program arguments need to be changed into /var/root/bin/tweet. It is possible to change the start interval from the default 86400, which is just once a day.

Label
com.sadun.tweet
ProgramArguments

/var/root/bin/tweet

StartInterval
600

The last thing to do in order for one's iPhone to tweet with findme reports is to reboot it with the new launch deamon.

Possible changes in Rogers data plan pricing. iPhone users to benefit

According to O_ssie from HowardForums, Rogers is introducing new data plans starting March 18th.

Firstly Rogers already does offer unlimited data plan for just $7. Sounds great you think! But there is a slight problem. You can use it only with Rogers phones (meaning purchased from Rogers) and you can only browse WAP pages. So all PDA's and Smartphones are excluded.

Effective March 18th 2008:
————————-
Unlimited WAP = $7
Unlimited Vision WAP = $7 - 3 yr term with DECF (Data Early Cancellation Fee)

But now Rogers is also announcing new data plan rates for Non-Rogers phones and regular usage Not quite unlimited, but much more affordable than before.

Non-Rogers WM Data Tethering - 3 yr term with DECF
$15 - 20MB ~ Tier 1
$30 - 20MB to 60MB ~ Tier 2
$50 - 60MB to 500MB ~ Tier 3
$65 - 500MB to 1GB ~ Tier 4
$75 - 1GB to 2GB ~ Tier 5
$85 - 2GB to 3GB ~ Tier 6
$100 - 3GB to 5GB ~ Tier 7
$0.03 per additional MB
*Note: Everyone starts off at the $15 plan and based on usage, you move up the tiers
ALL OLD PLANS GRANDFATHERED - ALL PLANS WILL NOT CONFLICT WITH $20 COMM PACK

The new rates are indeed much better then what we have now. Using iPhone is going to be more affordable now.

Here is an interesting example of the current wild rates from one of the Rogers customers:

Just got off the phone with Rogers “Customer Service”. I traveled to Germany and used my iPhone for just two days. Rogers charged me for 22 MB on these two days $1148. In my opinion this is ridiculous! If I wouldn’t have stopped using my Rogers phone after two days and used it for the rest of my stay (14 days) my phone bill would be $8036… just for data usage. At Rogers they think this is a valid price. I am recommending everybody with a similar experience to call Customer Service and be tough! Don’t speak to normal call center staff. Ask for a supervisor. I got a 50% discount on the data bill. That’s still more than $25 per megabyte. Compared to the $3 per megabyte for over plan usage a total rip-off. If I would treat my customers that way… I would be bankrupt within no time.

Daxian x999, yet another iPhone clone

It seems that people behind iPhone clones are getting better with each day. The new iPhone lookalike is called DaXian x999. It's a pretty impressive device which looks like iPhone, but under its skin it is Windows Mobile device.

It features 3.2-inch single-touch QVGA screen, dual 2-megapixel cameras, on the front and 1 in the back. It also has motion and proximity sensors, HTC like user interface. You can navigate 3D cube like menus with a slide of a finger.

Strangely developers were short on cash to get licensed copy of Windows mobile, so you will have to enjoy unlicensed one. Its price is $369.95. Would you buy such device over original iPhone which costs just a little bit more?
